Backroads Honeymoon

September 17, 2018

Mike and I were married on August 25, 2018 on the beach in Newport Coast, California.

We invited 73 of our closest friends and family, which seemed a lot seeing we've only known each other for 2 years.

Also in attendance were my 3 kids, 1 stepdaughter from my late husband, Mike's 2 kids and one granddaughter, Poppy. She was the real star.

We exchanged wedding vows after dinner, after a few cocktails and in between a performance by the Starlets, a 'Supremes type' band from LA, Mike and I danced down the aisle to 'Goin' To the Chapel'.

The night finished up with cupcakes and dancing at Dirty Bird Lounge in downtown Laguna.

It all just seemed so right.

A week later we were on a plane to Switzerland, where we were going to honeymoon with 17 strangers in the Swiss Alps. We had booked this trip with Backroads, the worlds #1 active travel company. They promise 'well-rounded adventures'.

This would be Mike and my 4th Backroads trip together. Since we met, we have been to New Zealand and Patagonia and this past summer we took my 2 daughters biking through Sicily. Luckily Backroads offered electric bikes to make the hills so much easier and the thought of having wine at lunch every day an easy decision to make.

Switzerland would be a multi- adventure trip , meaning we would be hiking, biking and kayaking- hopefully on different days. I requested an electric bike on the days we would be biking, though Mike was going to scale the mountains using his own leg power.

We met our Backroads group in Kandersteg, a quintessential Swiss town near Bern. After our first days hike and barbecue lunch lakeside, introductions were made, stories were shared and friendships began. The local beer and freshly grilled sausage needed no introductions.

The next 5 days, we biked around Lake Thun and Lake Brienz,  hiked the famous Eiger Trail, zipped down the mountain on Trotti bikes, learned how to make cheese fondue, blow a tune on an Alpenhorn and play games on a kayak. It was like a summer camp, except with wine and beer.

Mike and I were given lots of 'alone time' when everyone heard we were on our honeymoon. It was a perfect blend of being together and having friends to talk to when we wanted. The Backroads leaders did an amazing job of making sure everyone was having a great time and corrected any issues that arose with ease.

I loved the fact that we did not have to do anything, just show up in the morning and have our itinerary for the day handed to us. Our luggage was taken on to the next hotel without having to worry about it.

After a day of hiking or biking, our luggage was sitting in our new hotel room.

We would shower and change and meet our new friends for dinner. It was nirvana.

Sadly our trip came to an end way too quickly and Mike and I are already planning our next Backroads trip. Since our family has gotten so big, perhaps a bike trip through Amsterdam would be a perfect well rounded adventure for everyone.

 Ciao for now
